CEREMONIAL UNIFORMS -

This project is intended:

FORdescendants of the Cossacks who once lived in Budjak, southern Bessarabia, Russian Empire.

WHO: are interested in wearing military style uniforms on ceremonial occasions;

КТО: заинтересованы в ношении формы военного стиля в торжественных случаях;

FOR: ethnical or family reasons ONLY;

ТОЛЬКО по этническим или семейным причинам;

WITH: no relation whatsoever to any military or paramilitary activities, politics, religions, ideologies, organizations, governments or states.

Of course we have had in mind the countries in which Cossacks used to live, but solely for their cultural traditions. We have never thought of reviving their militarist past or backing their politics today! We only wanted to bring back to life our ethnical traditions, that were suppressed for many years either by communist regimes or by more recent events.

We tried to be as neuter as possible in this endeavor. We did not want to look like soldiers of any countries, even if some elements of these uniforms, or their design, clearly belong to  specific cultures. Our ancestors belonged to those cultures, we cannot change their history!

These are ceremonial uniforms only. They are not meant to be involved in any military or paramilitary activities whatsoever. They do not stand for any military official positions or ranks. And most important of all: they are not meant to be used as a propaganda tool in favour of anything and anybody!

This is not a reenactment project. We did not want a remake of our ancestors' uniforms, the way they were in the 19th century. We wanted some more modern ones inspired by their old designs. Some of them may be close to the original ones, some others may not.

As a conclusion: this is a tribute to our Cossack ancestors, because we are proud of them, proud of our Cossack families and of our Slavic roots. Nothing more!

My gratitude also goes to Ukrainian authorities, who kept a close watch on me and my work during my stay in Lviv and trips to Kiev, but they let me be! Nobody bothered me in Ukraine. Even under difficult and complicated circumstances of a war going on in Donbass, Ukraine proved to be a free and good country, in which I was allowed to work on my project without any problems. I very much appreciate this!

Many thanks to anyone who helped me do my work!

THE DANUBIAN COSSACK COMMUNITY

The Danubian Cossack community lives mainly in 3 countries: Ukraine, Moldova and Romania.

UKRAINE

In Ukraine the Bessarabian Cossacks wear modern style military uniforms. Here are 4 members of the Boudjak Cossack association, located in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky.

ROMANIA

In Romania, the Cossack community is located in Tulcea, and they wear traditional Ukrainian clothes:

REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

In Moldova I am not aware of Cossacks wearing specific clothes. For political reasons, Moldova is not the best place for Cossacks nowadays, so the Cossacks there are probably not interested in drawing attention to themselves.

DESIGN IDEAS FOR COSSACK UNIFORMS

Cossack ceremonial uniforms should always be a mixt of tradition and modernity. We cannot wear the same clothes or uniforms as our ancestors did: the fabrics are not the same nowadays, the technologies have changed, the colours are also different, etc. Some modern elements must be considered. On the other hand one cannot go too far away from the classical models, without losing some of the charm and flavour of the Cossack style.

Have a look at a reenactment 19th century imperial uniform, that is very close to what our Bessarabian Cossacks wore at that time:
